The father is an inventor and decided to pretend that his son was trapped inside an experimental balloon when it broke free.

They called the emergency services, cried and screamed and yelled, and generally acted it up big time, while really their son was hiding in a box in the garage.

The father, Richard Heene, continues to deny that the balloon emergency was faked.

Idiots.
