Gardening Tips for the Autumn

Autumn is now definitely upon us, so it is time to take a look at what we can do in the garden. The growing season is coming to a rapid close and the leaves are falling a plenty, so it is time for tidying up and making some decisions on how to prepare for next Spring. But the main job for the autumn is to put the garden to bed.

Tasks for Early Autumn
  • Now is the time to bring in the more delicate plants that will not survive the winter months.
  • Evergreens and conifers should be moved while the soil is still warm to prevent root damage.
  • Spring bulbs and bedding plants can be planted now.

Garden Tasks for Mid Autumn

  • Tidy up your perennials, removing all the dead stems, but leave the seeds for birds to eat.
  • Plant some deciduous trees, shrubs and deciduous climbers
  • Autumn is a good time to lay a new lawn as the soil is moist but not too wet
  • Secure your garden plants and furniture - prepare for winter storms. on windy nights

Garden Jobs for Late Autumn
  • Late autumn is a good time to plant shrubs, roses and hedglings that are sold with bare roots (these are the cheapest ones to buy, and usually hardy enough to survive a while without soil).
  • Clear up leaf fall and then mulch. A good leaf blower and mulcher pays dividends here.
  • Plant your tulips and hyacinths
  • Move deciduous trees and shrubs once they have lost their leaves
  • Take hardwood cuttings from shrubs and roses

Keith Richards on Johnny Depp, the Scream Awards and talking like a pirate

What is it with pirates? They are the most despicable people on earth (after politicians and estate agents) but yes everyone loves them. Children dress up as pirates, films are made, people talk like pirates. There is even a "talk like a pirate day" every year. Maybe one day children will dress up as terrorists and comedies will be made about cheeky Taliban blowing up banks and hotels.

Keith Richards and Johnny Depp

You never know who you're going to meet at the Scream Awards -- last year I found myself standing between Marilyn Manson and George Lucas -- and this year didn't disappoint. Not long after I arrived at the Greek Theatre for the taping of this year's show I was whisked off to a trailer for an unexpected interview with a guitar hero who qualifies as true rock royalty -- even if he was tapping his cigarette into an ashtray he had just made out of aluminum foil.

Another Expenses Scandal? Bloomberg Sets Record for His Own Spending on Elections

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has spent $85 million of his own money on his latest re-election campaign, more than anyone in U.S. history.

Where does a man get $85 million from? And why does someone want power so much that they would spend $85 million to guarantee them a seat on the thrown?

If I had that much money I would take a looooong vacation!

US balloon mother Mayumi Heene admits it was a hoax

Mayumi Heene, the mother of a child (Falcon, 6 years old) involved in a crazy publicity stunt in America has finally admitted that she and her husband made it all up and that it was a hoax. The father is an inventor and decided to pretend that his son was trapped inside an experimental balloon when it broke free.

They called the emergency services, cried and screamed and yelled, and generally acted it up big time, while really their son was hiding in a box in the garage.

The father, Richard Heene, continues to deny that the balloon emergency was faked.

Idiots.

Rihanna’s Low Carb Approach

Rihanna recognizes that carbs are a problem for her, as the sugars in carbohydrates are quickly turned to fat. To control this she often has no-carb days, sometimes she does this for 3 or 4 days at a time to keep her fat levels down.

For breakfast she often just has hot water with lemon, pineapple and cooked egg whites. Lunch will be some potatoes for the essential muscle fuel (glycogen) with a variety of fish. She often eats fish twice a day.
